The Emerging Multicultural Leadership Experience (EMLE) is a learning experience designed to provide everyone, particularly staff of color, opportunities to build greater understanding and higher-level thinking of issues facing minority groups and how the Y, as a service organization, can engage, heal and strengthen communities.
It’s no secret that the communities that our YMCAs serve are growing increasingly more diverse. If we are to effectively engage and serve our members and their communities, then it is incumbent upon us to hire multicultural staff reflective of their surrounding neighborhoods.
The Emerging Multicultural Leadership Experience (EMLE) is a dynamic professional development opportunity that celebrates and supports the Y’s next generation of multicultural leaders through networking and mentoring opportunities, educational presentations and resources that inspire staff to deepen their commitment to a career in the Y. Attendees return to work with new and renewed connections to colleagues throughout the Movement and better positioned to grow and thrive at the Y. At EMLE, staff spend time in fellowship with peers from across the Movement, discuss the unique challenges they share, and connect with Y leaders who help them envision their own future with the Y—all factors that contribute to greater employee engagement and retention. EMLE attendees routinely report feeling a greater sense of support and increased commitment to the Y following the event.
The primary audience of EMLE is full-time and part-time multicultural staff—from those just starting their Y careers to Y veterans and our most senior leaders. Additionally, staff who identify as white always are welcomed to attend as allies to their multicultural peers and supporters of the Y’s efforts to develop a pipeline of diverse leaders in the Y. If you have staff that you believe will benefit from this event, please encourage them to attend!
